Boom Safety Essentials

Your service crane is one of the hardest working pieces of equipment you own and it's critical to take proper care of it to prevent a breakdown or, worse yet, personal injury.

Whether you're a seasoned operator or new to the job, understanding and maintaining the boom components ensures safe, reliable lifting and extends the life of your equipment.

Let’s start with a quick refresher: The boom on a crane is the primary lifting beam. Depending on the model, it may feature multiple extensions—some hydraulic, some manual. Several key systems make up the boom, including:

Anti-two-block (A2B) device Boom tip light Hoist Sheaves Bearing plates (these allow the boom sections to slide smoothly over each other)

All of these components must be properly maintained for safe operation.

Kats Rejoins STI Sales Team

Service Trucks International (STI) and Tiger Cranes are pleased to announce that Cory Kats has rejoined the sales team as the Regional Sales Manager for the Midwest Region. Kats will manage STI and Tiger Cranes sales in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas and portions of western Iowa and Missouri.

Kats worked at Service Trucks International from 2011 to 2022, starting out prepping chassis and inspecting units before joining the sales team in 2016. In 2022, he left Iowa to pursue a career opportunity in Florida. With Kats’ experience and knowledge, STI and Tiger Cranes are excited to have Kats back on the team working in the same region he previously worked.

Kats and his wife, Erica, have a 12-year-old son and make their home in Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Tiger Cranes Introduces New Telescopic Service Cranes

Tiger Cranes has launched four new telescopic service cranes. The new models are designed to push the envelope of capacity, performance, and ease of use for the next generation of operators.

The new models feature a low profile boom head and upgraded anti-two-block design. The Tiger Crane models 6543 (6.5k – 30.5ft), 8652 (8.6k – 21ft), and 8653 (8.6k – 30.5ft) are designed around use on a Class 5 and 6 chassis to create a powerful but nimble platform for service.   The 1593 (14.8k – 30.5ft) is built to pair with large class 7 and 8 chassis, maximizing the weight-to-capacity balance to increase unit payload and offers an optional full proportional control for simple multifunction control.   Increased negative boom angle, with our standard boom-mounted winch makes it easy to store the load block before heading on to the next job.

Recent Changes Announced

Sioux Automation Center, the parent company of Service Trucks International (STI) and Tiger Cranes, was recently sold resulting in STI becoming a stand-alone company with one focus – building service bodies and hydraulic/electric cranes.

“We are very excited to make this change in our company structure. It will allow us to devote all our time and resources on building and selling service bodies and cranes,” said Walt Van Laren, president of Service Trucks International. “The manufacturing space and resources previously dedicated to building Sioux Automation ag equipment is now utilized by STI.”

Service Trucks International was created as a division of Sioux Automation Center in 1985, while Tiger Cranes was formed in 1990. Since then, STI and Tiger Cranes have continued to grow every year and are now industry leaders.

Customer Support Services Expanded

Service Trucks International has announced recent changes have been made at the company. The service, parts, and warranty department has expanded to ensure fast and efficient support services for customers.

The expansion is a result of additional focus and resources devoted to STI and Tiger Cranes. “Excellent equipment and superior customer service are at the heart of a successful business. We’ve always had great service, which will only be better with the addition of personnel in our parts, warranty, and service areas. We are restructuring and improving every day,” said Walt Van Laren, president of Service Trucks International.

Customers will find additional options and information on the Support page of servicetrucks.com, including the ability to submit online service and parts requests.

Reconditioning includes a wide variety of options, including remounting a truck body on a new chassis, collision repair, repainting, replacing old or damaged components, and adding options such as a new compressor, welder, lube skid, or cabinet configuration. “Service trucks are made to work hard and they sometimes take a beating on job sites. It’s just the nature of the business. Then there are cases when a used service truck is purchased and the new owner wants to fix it up and make it their own. We can do all of that, plus more,” said Walt Van Laren, president of Service Trucks International. Van Laren said reconditioning services will only be available for Service Trucks International trucks and Tiger Cranes.
